Some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about hair care are: Why does my hair break? Why does my hair get greasy? And how do you get healthy hair?
Good hair care is rarely straightforward. Here, we’ve put together our best tips and tricks for hair and scalp care.

1. Whenyou wash your hair, it’s actually the scalp that’s most important to clean. In fact, we should really rename ‘hair washing’ to ‘scalp washing’. Make sure you focus on the scalp when washing your hair; feel free to massage and gently scratch it with your fingernails or with ourscalp brush. The scalp is a collection point for dead skin cells, natural sebum from the scalp, pollution, styling products and dirt – all of which are detrimental to the tiny hair follicles, which ideally need a healthy environment with plenty of space to grow new hair. If the hair follicle becomes blocked, this will result in thinner and more brittle strands of hair, ingrown hairs and impurities on the scalp.
The ACTIVATE scalp brush is like an extra helping hand when you’re in the shower. It effectively removes build-up around the hair follicles, thereby clearing the way for oxygenated follicles and strengthened strands, whilst the massaging movements relieve muscle tension and headaches.
2.Don’twashyour hair too often. The more frequently you wash your hair, the more oils your scalp will produce in an attempt to compensate for the drying effect caused by shampoo and washing. This can become a vicious cycle and lead to an oily scalp. Skip a wash with PUFF dry shampoo – a 100% natural and fragrance-free dry shampoo, containing a silky-fine powder blend of tapioca, cornflour and kaolin clay, which gently coats the hair shaft to absorb excess oil from the hair and scalp.
3. Whenwashing your hair, use lukewarm water. It is said that water at around 40 degrees is the ideal temperature for washing your hair. Do not subject your hair and scalp to excessively hot water, as this severely dries out the hair, leaving it brittle and dull. SWISH shampoo is a gentle, naturally foaming, sulphate-free shampoo with soothing, antibacterial properties derived from potent plant extracts.
4. Make sureto rinse your hair, and especially your scalp, thoroughly after every wash. Tilt your head back and forth in sections to ensure all hair product is removed. Shampoo and conditioner are wash-off products that are not formulated to remain on the skin or hair. The ACTIVATE scalp brush can make it easier to wash all soap residue and dirt out of the scalp.
5. Useour GLORY conditioneras a lighter, nourishing conditioning treatment. Its nourishing and stimulating ingredients provide the perfect care for a dry scalp and lacklustre hair. Massage GLORY into the scalp using relaxing massage strokes or with the ACTIVATE scalp brush on wet hair, after you have washed with shampoo.

We recommend using an extra-nourishing hair mask 1–2 times a week. Leave the HALO hair mask in your hair for 5–15 minutes whilst you do something else – for example, exfoliating your skin or shaving your legs – incidentally, HALO is also excellent to use as an alternative to shaving cream and shaving foam. After using HALO, you don’t need to use conditioner. HALO leaves the hair cuticle sealed, nourished and protected.
Pro tip: Comb or brush your hair whilst you have a hair mask or conditioner in it to minimise damage – especially if you have curly hair, which is more prone to breakage than straight hair.
6. Finish washing your hair with a cold rinse. Cold water closes the hair cuticle, seals in the treatment and helps keep your hair soft and shiny.
7. Are you looking for hair tips that really make a difference? Start with your scalp first. A crucial hair tip is to maintain the pH balance of your scalp. When your scalp’s pH is out of balance, it can lead to a whole host of problems – dryness, irritation, an oily scalp or other occasional issues we may experience in this area, as your scalp tries to compensate for the pH imbalance. Disrupting this delicate balance can also make your scalp more vulnerable to infections and may inhibit hair growth. Apply HERO pH Solutionto the scalp on towel-dried hair after washing to balance the scalp’s pH, natural protective barrier and sebum production.
8. Whenyou’ve just washed your hair, it’s not healthy to leave it wrapped in a towel turban for too long. A turban is fine for a few minutes; gently squeeze excess water out of your hair after your shower, and wrap it briefly in a turban – just long enough to catch the excess water dripping down your back. After that, your hair and scalp should be allowed to air-dry. Do not rub your hair with the towel. Take care of the fragile strands – wet hair is particularly vulnerable and breaks easily. Gently squeeze excess water out of your hair, but do not rub it with the towel.
9. Wetor damp hair must not be left in a bun or ponytail for many hours. This can lead to a fungal infection of the scalp. The hair needs to dry immediately after washing, not only many hours later when the bun or ponytail is taken out.
10. Brushyour hair from the ends upwards. The DEVOTEhairbrushis gentle onthe scalpand the hair shaft. The round wooden tips glide effortlessly through the hair, gently detangling it and minimising the risk of broken strands. Start by brushing the ends and work your way gently up through the hair, rather than starting at the roots and pulling the tangled hair down through the rest of the hair.
11. Brushyour hair thoroughly and for a long time on a regular basis. It is healthy for the scalp to be massaged and stimulated by soft bristles. It’s just like dry brushing your body. It removes dead skin and stimulates blood circulation in the scalp. Your ordinary hairbrush is perfect for the job, but if you want to give your scalp even better care, we recommendthe ACTIVATE scalp brush. The most delightful and effective way to stimulate the scalp. Gentle pressure and massage of the scalp increase blood circulation, which is a key factor in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss. Regular exfoliating scalp massage also helps to reduce dandruff and dryness naturally.
12. Do you find that your hair tends to get greasy? Often, greasy hair is simply your scalp’s natural oils doing their job a little too well. This can be due to a number of different reasons, ranging from washing your hair too often (which can strip your scalp of oils and cause it to overcompensate) to using products that may be too heavy for your hair type.
A good hair tip is to use holidays as an opportunity to give your hair a break from washing it too often. During these periods, you might find it easier to cope with greasy hair. If you’re also weaning yourself off the silicones found in conventional shampoos and conditioners, it will take time for your hair and scalp to find their natural balance, and your hair may feel greasy at first.
13. Treatyour scalptoan oil treatment regularly. Although it takes two washes to get the oil out of your hair, I find that my hair is nourished by the nutrient-rich oils and that this makes the strands look fuller. TryHOPE, MILD or WILD body oil, depending on your mood. If your scalp feels irritated, you can useMILD body oil. A good tip for rinsing the oil out of your hair more easily is to massage shampoo into your hair before getting it wet in the shower.
For daily hair care, you can useEPIC hair oilon your ends and lengths. EPIC isa natural, silicone-free hair oil/dry oil that helps improve hair elasticity, reduce frizz and soften dry, brittle ends, whatever your hair type. The hair oil is packed with vitamins, minerals and protective antioxidants that nourish your hair.
14. Usehair ties that aren’t held together by a metal clip. Opt for welded ones instead, as the metal parts can snap your hair. Another hair tip is: don’t sleep with your hair in a bun or ponytail, as this puts strain on your hair.
15. Giveyourself a scalp massage whilst watching your favourite series. This can easily be done without any product on your fingers – for example, using the ACTIVATE scalp brush – but is even more beneficial with a good oil.
16. Trimmingsplit ends is one of the most important hair tips of all. Cutting off split ends can prevent further breakage. Things like colouring or straightening can weaken and dry out your hair if not done properly or done too often.
17. Another tip for maintaining healthy hair is to use only hair care products and styling products that are good not just for your hair, but also for your skin. Everything you apply to your hair to provide moisture, shine, protection and nourishment will often come into contact with your skin as well, and this isn’t always beneficial for your skin, as many styling products can be occlusive and may cause blemishes and scalp problems.
AMAZE hair hydrator has been specifically developed to provide the best care for the lengths of your hair, whilst also taking your scalp and skin into account. Its formulation is so pure that you can use any excess product on, for example, your hands and forearms as a luxurious, nourishing skin treatment.
REBEL Hair Texturiser is a styling spray for the hair containing natural ingredients. REBEL is formulated with non-drying sugar molecules instead of salt to create that coveted beach hair look, without compromising the health of your hair and scalp, as a saltwater spray would.
On busy days, you can use PUFF dry shampoo, a natural and fragrance-free dry shampoo that tackles greasy hair.
18. A tip for healthy hair to bear in mind: be gentle with your locks. Try to limit your use of high heat if you’re using a hairdryer, straighteners or similar appliances on the highest setting. Heat causes damage to your hair. If you’re heat-styling your hair, always use a heat-protective styling product. Heat protection is just one of the many benefits of our AMAZE Hair Hydrator – read more about the product here.
19.CALM balm isideal for use on the ends of the hair as a softening styling product for both long and short hairstyles. Use it on dry hair as a styling product or on towel-dried hair to nourish, tame and soften.
20. Drinkwater. Both new and existing hair strands need hydration to grow long and healthy. Just like the skin, the hair is last in line to benefit from the water we drink. A well-hydrated body will also result in stronger, healthier hair. One of our key slogans is ‘STAY HYDRATED’ – both from the inside and out.AMAZE Hair Hydrator delivers hydrating ingredients to your hair – just like a big, revitalising glass of water. Another important hair tip is to consider your diet. What you eat plays a major role in the health of your hair. Make sure you get plenty of vitamins and minerals. Foods rich in protein, omega-3 and biotin can help promote stronger, healthier hair. Remember that the health of your hair is an extension of your general wellbeing, so take good care of yourself, from the inside out.
