Opinions are divided on whether sun cream can cause acne and spots. It often depends very much on the individual’s skin type, skin condition and personal history. It is a myth that sun cream causes blemished skin. However, if, for example, you tend to have oily skin, the combination of sun cream and increased heat-related sweating can make your skin more congested than usual.
Some people may feel that their skin cannot ‘breathe’ when using sun cream, but this sensation alone will not necessarily lead to blemished skin. The mineral sun filters used in Karmameju SUN do not block the skin’s pores. One reason that can lead to spots when using sun cream over a longer period is that the pores become clogged with dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria and sweat accumulated throughout the day. This can lead to blemishes over time, but only if the skin isn’t cleansed thoroughly every day – and ideally given extra attention after using sun cream.
So how can you avoid spots in the summer when using sun cream?
We recommend cleansing and exfoliating your skin extra thoroughly during periods of hot weather and when using sun cream daily. Double cleansing in the evening is particularly effective.
How to double cleanse
There are two types of impurities on the skin after a long day in the sun: fat-soluble (make-up, sun cream, excess sebum) and water-soluble (dust, dead skin cells and sweat). That’s why you need two types of cleansing products to cleanse deeply.
If, for example, you only use an oil-based cleanser, which dissolves sun cream and make-up, in the worst-case scenario you’ll only remove these.
- Start with an oil-based cleanser, such as MUSE cleansing balm.
- Next, apply the second cleanser: the water-soluble cleanser. For example, your STAR micellar water or NOW micellar foam.
We recommend using your cleansing products, which are tailored to your skin type, in combination with our gentle konjac sponge or washcloth at the end of the day, as these cleanse deeply and have a mild exfoliating effect on the skin’s surface.
Another reason for blemished skin after using sun cream could be a hypersensitivity reaction to chemical UV filters, which can irritate the skin and cause spots and pimples.
