Storytelling / Agarwood, also known as oud, is formed in the heartwood of Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a specific type of fungus (Phialophora parasitica). Before infection, the heartwood is odourless, relatively light in colour and pale; as the infection progresses, the tree produces a dark, aromatic resin, known as oud or oodh, in response to the attack, resulting in a very dense, dark resin. The resin-infused wood is prized in Arab and Middle Eastern culture for its distinctive scent and is thus used in incense and perfumes. The aromatic properties of agarwood (oud) are influenced by the species, geographical location, the branch, history and root origin of the tree, the length of time since infection, and the methods of harvesting and processing. Top-grade oud is one of the world’s most expensive raw materials.
