Reduce your carbon footprint – an important way to look after the environment

Like many others, I’m concerned about our beautiful Mother Earth. We know we’re living beyond our means when it comes to the resources the planet has available.

There are many ways in which we can make a difference in our own homes, and we were delighted to discover Clevercare at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit in 2014. Clevercare has an important message that we’d like to help spread.

If we all optimise the way we wash our clothes, we can have a noticeable positive impact on the environment.

The clothing industry is responsible for a large amount of pollution, but a surprisingly large share of the responsibility also lies with us, the consumers. A remarkably high percentage of the pollution generated during the life cycle of a garment (from production to disposal) occurs in our homes after we have bought the garment, due to frequent washing at unnecessarily high temperatures.

Clevercare recommends: 6 simple steps to protect the environment

- Wash less often. Outerwear rarely needs washing. Instead, we recommend airing it out and spot-cleaning – two great ways to keep your clothes clean and fresh, whilst also extending their lifespan. Air your clothes outside or by an open window.

- Lower the water temperature. The colder the water, the better it is for the environment and the lifespan of your clothes. Wash at a maximum of 30°C whenever possible.

- Use the tumble dryer less. Only tumble dry clothes that really need it.

- Avoid using the dry cleaner’s. They use harsh chemicals. Spot-clean and air your clothes instead. Brush suits and coats.

- Use eco-friendly detergent. For your health, for your skin and to protect our planet.

- Protect your clothes when eating and drinking. Spills at the dinner table are the most common cause of stained clothes.

Overconsumption puts a strain on the environment and our planet. That’s why we’re delighted when people tell us they’ve had their Karmameju bathrobes, jumpsuits, blankets and COZY socks for many years. The most environmentally friendly thing we can do as consumers is to wear our clothes until they’re worn out or to pass them on or sell them.

Please do share this important message.

All the best
Mette
