It’s hard to miss Hanni Gohr’s face when you’re bombarded by Karmameju’s images – whether on a sign at the airport or on our Instagram. As a long-standing model, she’s spent countless hours in the hair and make-up chair, which has turned Hanni into a self-proclaimed skincare nerd (we can confirm she knows what she’s talking about!). If you take a look at her Instagram, you can’t help but see a visually creative person who moves in the intersection between fashion, art (Hanni creates her own collages), interior design, funky styling and a daily life that offers both the idyll of a rural holiday home and colourful city life. Hanni is a muse who inspires us. Now you can get to know ‘the face of Karmameju’ better in this interview – and, not least, discover her best skincare rituals.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your daily life…

My weekdays vary. There are plenty of days when I work from home on my collages, but also days spent on the computer and phone – mostly for social media. And then there are days when I have to go on a photoshoot. It’s what you might call a one-woman business. That’s why I’m glad to have agents and a boyfriend I can bounce ideas off – because I really need that.

We’ve spent the whole summer on Møn, where we’ve been renovating our holiday home. And we’re still not finished. We’ve done most of it ourselves, and it’s been exhausting at times, but the thought that we have a little gem surrounded by nature, the sea and tranquillity, where we can retreat whenever we like, get our hands dirty and dream up little DIY projects, is a real ‘pinch-me’ moment. I’ve always had a huge need to make things with my hands. When my hands are working, the creative flow in my brain kicks in, and I feel a sense of fulfilment that I can’t achieve in any other way. It unlocks some amazing inner processes within me.

What’s your morning routine like?

I love mornings and waking up early. The best are summer mornings, when I wake up with the sun, but otherwise I set my alarm to give myself plenty of time before I have to head out the door. There’s a calm in the morning; I have a huge need to prioritise. Time passes lovely and slowly in the morning – at all other times of the day, it goes by so quickly.

I always make a huge pot of green tea, which I drink before I go out. I work out as many mornings a week as I can. I alternate between HOT yoga, running groups and Reformer classes. My body feels great when I work on my flexibility and muscles.

What does your skincare routine involve?

Basically, anything that optimises my skin’s moisture intake and helps it retain that moisture. Moisture is essential for me. That’s why I always use a mild cleanser, though I always double-cleanse in the summer because of sun cream, and otherwise as needed throughout the seasons. A facial mist is the first step. I use KISS mist, which soothes my sensitive skin and moisturises with hyaluronic acid – probably my favourite ingredient in skincare. So it’s no surprise that I always use a serum containing hyaluronic acid. Serums are also the products I’d never want to be without in my whole routine. Hyaluronic acid needs to be ‘sealed in’ with a cream or oil on top. Then I take a look at my skin that day and decide whether to use a cream, an oil or a mix. For most of the winter, it’s a mix. During the day, I add a vitamin C serum – the CLEAR facial serum – because it protects against the free radicals that are formed when we’re exposed to the sun’s UV rays and pollution, amongst other things. Plus, vitamin C has a beneficial effect on my sun damage.

What’s your best beauty tip?

I’ve got loads, but discovering mild fruit acid peels has worked wonders for my sun damage. I know I’ll probably have to live with it for the rest of my life, but adding fruit acid has faded it quite a bit. And on top of that, my skin looks so much better – more glowing and with smaller pores. Speaking of sun damage: always use sun cream. I do it all year round.

When do you feel most at ease?

I know we’re heading into autumn, but I feel best on warm summer days, when the days are long and bright, and the sea is just a dip away. It’s therapeutic for me.

 What inspires you?

I work in a creative industry, of course, and I particularly love it when we delve into the world of art and interior design. Yes, I absolutely love being surrounded by beautiful, fun things – elements that have and tell a story. Some of my greatest sources of inspiration in life are my travels, where everything is new and exciting, where an ordinary home feels exotic, where food is first enjoyed with the eyes and then the stomach, and where every single corner is fascinating.

Is there anything you dream of?

I still dream of writing a very specific children’s book, or actually more of creating the visuals with my collages. It’s a dream I’ve had for many years, and it lives inside me, but I’m afraid to take the plunge – perhaps because I’m not quite ready yet, but one day it’ll come to fruition.

When do you feel at your healthiest?

Physically, I feel healthy most of the time, but definitely when I exercise regularly, I feel strongest, and therefore healthiest. Because I feel that I’m looking after my body by keeping it active.

I always feel mentally healthy, but that doesn’t stop me from having plenty of natural moments where I might cry, and crying for five minutes is often a good mental tool for me: a valve that just needs to be released. If I’m stressing about something, I try to turn it inwards and talk some sense into my brain. I remind myself that stressing won’t make me run any faster or get things done any quicker. It’s funny that I need to be reminded of this, but it’s definitely a strength to be able to calm yourself down in most situations.

How do you make sure you check in with yourself?

I’m not always sure if I do, but I try, and it’s a good starting point – if I’m allowed to give myself a pat on the back here, and I must. I’ve learnt, and am still learning, to set boundaries, which is a way of standing up for my needs and non-needs. It’s a process, but it gives me strength. In my day-to-day life – and this might sound a bit corny – I appreciate the little things. Happiness is made up of moments, and nothing is too small to appreciate. Happiness is one of the most important things in life.

What are your favourite Karmameju products?

The MUSE cleansing balm is fantastic and MILD. I often use it before I go for a morning dip and wash it off with the sea water – the best feeling. AMAZE Hair Hydrator smells so good and my perpetually dry hair just soaks it up. The RECHARGE dry brush is a beauty tool that wakes me and my body up, and I feel as though I can sense the tiniest blood vessels all over my body – a little rush.
